NORS Annual Conference 2021

The NORS Annual Conference aims to be a meeting place for the Norwegian Operations Research community for exchanging ideas and presenting ongoing research. We especially encourage PhD candidates to present their work.

The conference hopes to bring researchers, practitioners, and students within Operations Research together to discuss industrial challenges, modeling approaches, and/or solution methods. The program includes parallel sessions focusing on current problems in the industry, existing applications, and ongoing research.

The conference will be hosted at NHH in Bergen.

Academic plenary speakers:

  • Professor Miguel F. Anjos, Professor and Chair of Operational Research in the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh. In addition, Professor Anjos is a fellow of EUROPT, the European Working Group on Continuous Optimization, and the President of the INFORMS Section on Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment. He is the Schöller Senior Fellow for 2020, holds an Inria International Chair, and is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is also a licensed professional engineer in Ontario and a senior member of IEEE. Professor Anjos’ research is concerned with using mathematical optimization to provide guaranteed optimal or near-optimal solutions for important classes of large-scale discrete nonlinear optimization problems arising in engineering applications.
  • Mette Bjørndal, Professor at the Department of Business and Management Science and former Vice-Rector of NHH. Professor Bjørndal has worked on numerous research projects, often in close collaboration with regulators and industry partners, on transmission pricing and congestion management, and benchmarking and regulation in the electricity sector. Some of the projects have had a significant impact on the Norwegian regulatory practice.
  • Endre Bjørndal, Professor at the Department of Business and Management Science, NHH. He is an expert on analysis and regulation of energy markets, and his key areas of expertise include benchmarking and regulation of natural monopolies, pricing and congestion management in electricity markets, as well as intermittent renewables. He has participated in many research projects financed by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), Energy Norway and various energy companies, as well as the Norwegian Research Council.

Industry plenary speaker:

  • Eivind Lindeberg, Senior Advisor for automatic control systems and markets, Statnett. He is involved in a number of R&D, modeling and implementation projects across Statnett. His experience will provide important insights about upcoming modeling needs and challenges in the sector.

Location and important dates

Conference Dates:17-18 November 2021 (lunch-to-lunch)
Location:NHH Norwegian School of Economics, Bergen
Abstract Submission:1 September 2021 (deadline)
10 June 2021 (opens)

The plan is to have a physical conference with all the participants attending and giving their talks at the venue. However, due to the uncertainties caused by the current COVID19-outbreak, there is a high chance for our international plenary speaker to give his talk remotely. We thank Professor Anjos for agreeing to take part in this conference even with the risk of him not being able to attend physically. We believe his talk will be a great contribution to provide the attendees with an international perspective of the current OR developments applied in the energy sector. We will update this website as soon as new information becomes available.
