We seek a high performing Consultant to work in our Optimisation and Decision Support Practice which delivers consulting and implementation services to our customers globally. The selected candidate will be working with some of the largest oil & gas companies in the world helping them improve their decision processes through designing and implementing optimisation algorithms, providing advanced decision support and implementing KPI based planning methods.

Responsibilities
. Facilitating and leading workshops with clients, with the purpose of analysing and gathering user requirements and documenting business processes
. Analysis of business requirements and present findings concisely.
. Model decision processes and value chains
. Performing opportunity mapping, gap analysis, identify risks, identify dependencies and recommendations for process improvement
. Integration of domain-specific optimisation models across the oil and gas value chain

Skills
. Keen interest in taking decision making and algorithm performance to the next level.
. Self-driven, ambitious and willing to take ownership of projects/tasks
. Desire to learn and adapt new skills, tools and technologies

Qualifications

. Experience from business consulting, optimisation consulting, advanced analytics consulting or similar is preferable

Call for applications to the NHH Summer course on Rural Logistics

 

We invite applicants for the summer course on Rural Logistics offered by the Department of Business and Management Science at NHH Norwegian School of Economics. The applicants must be Ph.D. or Master students. The course will run from Sunday August 12 morning to Saturday August 18 lunch, 2018.

For this course, there is no registration fee but the number of places is limited. To apply the candidates must submit a CV and a recommendation letter from a professor, preferably the thesis adviser. This application must submitted before June 1 by email to Julio C. Góez at julio.goez@nhh.no. The results of the selection process will be announced on June 15.

 

Lunches and social activity:

During the course, there will be lunches and refreshments offer. Additionally, we will have an afternoon with a social activity and dinner.  The cost for the lunches, social activity and dinner is NOK 1350, and this cost must be covered by the attendees.

 

Accommodation:

The attendees have the option to share a room at the Bergen Hostel Montana, which includes breakfast. The cost per person for this accommodation is NOK 4500 for seven nights, and it must be cover by the attendees. To reserve a place with this option the attendees must confirm the reservation with Natalia Florez at Natalia.Florez@nhh.no before June 20.

 

EURO-NORS Scholarship:

We currently have three scholarships sponsored by EURO and NORS to cover the following local expenses:

  • Local accommodation in double rooms at the Bergen Hostel Montana, which includes breakfast;
  • Lunches and refreshments during the course breaks
  • And one afternoon with a social activity and dinner

 

The rest of the meals must be cover by the applicant; the travel expenses are not included in the scholarship.

 

To qualify for this scholarship the student must come from one of the countries with an existing society associated with EURO. The three beneficiaries of the scholarship will be selected from the pool of applicants qualified to take it, and the results of the selection process will be announced on June 15.

 

Course Description:

The Far North has its special challenges in terms of logistics planning. This course on rural logistics, focused on areas with a low density of people, long distances and difficult access conditions. Logistics planning in rural areas, such as the High North, is very different from logistics planning in cities and densely populated areas. The logistic issues related with rural areas are not well cover by the existing literature, for example timing of services is much more important than capacity – the bus is never full, but IS there a bus? We will focus on developing planning models for logistics when distances are vast, environmental uncertainties high, and connectedness is more important than capacity (contrary to city logistics). Postdoctoral position at SINTEF Optimization

SINTEF Digital is searching for Postdoctoral candidate at SINTEF Optimization

The Optimization group at SINTEF Digital is looking for a professional and dedicated postdoctoral candidate. The candidate will be working within the basic research project “Design and Experimental Analysis of Novel Integrated Optimization Methods” (AXIOM) funded by the Research Council of Norway. Keywords are discrete optimization, matheuristics, cooperative methods, parallel and heterogeneous computing, GPU, vehicle routing, inventory routing. The duration of the position will be two years, with the intention to make it a permanent position if all parties are interested.

About SINTEF Optimization:

The Optimization group currently consists of 17 researchers and software engineers. It is one of eight groups within the Department of Mathematics and Cybernetics. For the past 20 years, we have been developing optimization methods, software prototypes, libraries, and components. We have built expertise at an international level and have a good publication record. The group conducts basic and applied research on discrete optimization for planning, scheduling, routing, sequencing, and timetabling. Our main market areas are transportation: road, railway, maritime, aviation; healthcare; sports; energy; and finance. We develop our own software libraries that have been refined over many years and contain a range of different solution methods (exact and approximate), but we also utilize commercial solvers. We commercialize our results, either through existing solution vendors, spin-off companies, or directly to end users. Our revenues come from users in industry and the public sector, often supported by Norwegian or EU funding bodies.

The AXIOM project: SINTEF has two partners: 1) Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management at NTNU (project owner) 2) Molde University College. Collaboration with world leading research groups from Portugal, Canada, USA, Italy, Brazil is an integral part. The main objective is to design novel integrated methods for solving complex discrete optimization problems. Expected results are innovative methods that combine elements from exact methods and metaheuristics and utilize cooperative search, task parallelism, and data parallelism. AXIOM has four work packages (WPs). WP1 starts from exact methods and analyzes how these methods can be extended and improved using heuristics. WP2 investigates how exact methods are best utilized within a metaheuristic framework. WP3 develops cooperative search methods that fully utilize all processing units of modern PCs and are flexible and scalable. In WP4 experimental data are collected, analyzed, and synthesized into new knowledge and understanding. The candidate will mainly work within WP3.

Qualifications: As a postdoc in AXIOM, your responsibilities will involve development of cooperative search methods for vehicle routing problems. We are looking for candidates with a PhD in applied mathematics, operations research, or computer science. Fluency in English is expected, along with excellent communication and presentation skills. Moreover, you should be curious, inventive, have a proactive attitude, and be a good team player.

Expertise: We require a solid background in combinatorial optimization. We seek candidates with expertise in several of the following areas:

  • Parallel computing (task and data parallelism, heterogeneous computing)
  • Mathematical programming and decomposition methods
  • Heuristics, metaheuristics, and matheuristics
  • Cooperative search
  • Vehicle routing and inventory routing

Software development skills:

  • We are looking for candidates with excellent programming skills (C#, C++),
    GPU programming in particular (CUDA).

Dr. Matthias Winkenbach is the Director of the MIT Megacity Logistics Lab and a Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for Transportation & Logistics (CTL). He is also spearheading a new research initiative at MIT CTL at the intersection of supply chain and logistics, data science and visualization, and human decision-making – the MIT Computational and Visual Education (CAVE) Lab.

Title:

Modeling real-world urban logistics systems – using data to master the last mile

Abstract:

Urban mobility systems are facing a number of major challenges that threaten their future ability to sustain the economic and social activity of cities. First, urbanization is progressing at a rapid pace, with more than 85% of the global population expected to live in cities by 2030. Unprecedented levels of urban density, both in terms of population and economic activity, call for innovative mobility solutions for people and goods. Second, the boom in ecommerce and `on-demand consumerism´ impose an additional burden on urban logistics systems and the underlying infrastructure. Urban freight volumes are growing and becoming increasingly fragmented as customer expectations towards the speed, flexibility, reliability, and customization of their shipments are rising quickly. Existing planning tools and distribution approaches no longer allow for an effective consolidation of urban freight flows on cost-efficient and well-utilized vehicle routes. Third, the increasingly severe effects of urban mobility on the environment and public health require the adoption of cleaner, smarter and more efficient vehicles.
In this talk, Dr. Winkenbach will touch upon some of the quantitative methods and data sources employed by his team of researchers at the MIT Megacity Logistics Lab to solve real-world last-mile logistics problems, and to enable an optimal strategic design and operational planning of freight distribution systems in complex and volatile urban environments. Further, he will highlight the growing importance of data science methods for the optimal design and control of urban freight mobility systems. Using the example of several prototype applications under development at MIT CTL’s newly created MIT Computational and Visual Education (CAVE) Lab, he will demonstrate the potential of interactive information visualization for data- and analytics-driven supply chain and logistics decision making.

DTU CEE Summer School 2018 Modern Optimization in Energy

DTU CEE Summer School brings together academics and industry professionals from around the world, in an intensive 5-day course, where they learn about the latest developments in optimization for energy systems, connect, and exchange ideas. Distinguished speakers from the US and Europe, excelling both in research and teaching, are invited to give 4-hour lectures both providing the fundamentals and introducing advanced topics in their field.

The DTU CEE Summer School 2018 aims to give participants practical experience with the latest developments in optimization for energy systems. Participants of the course will:
